Japan Roots Journey
Okinawa, Nagasaki, and a stretch of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
Strongest personal reason on the list: birthplace, Japanese roots, Christian history, pilgrimage structure, excellent trains, and a reason to talk to people rather than merely sightsee.
Why this trip
Most Japan trips collect temples and neon. This one is different: start in Okinawa where you were born, move through Fukuoka into Nagasaki’s Hidden Christian sites, then walk a segment of Shikoku’s 88 temples — not as athletic achievement, but as interaction and rhythm. Finish in Osaka or Kyoto before flying home.
The idea
Okinawa, Nagasaki, and a stretch of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
Start where you were born, spend real time with Hidden Christian history in Nagasaki, then walk a manageable segment of Shikoku — inns and small towns, not a race.
What the days could feel like
Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.
Morning
Slow neighborhood walk or temple stretch before the day fills up.
Afternoon
Museums, cathedrals, ferry time, or a pilgrimage segment with trains and taxis as needed.
Evening
Local food — yatai in Fukuoka, small inns along the pilgrimage, city neighborhoods on the mainland.
One meaningful site or stretch of walking each day is enough. Leave space.
Anchor experiences
- Base in Naha and treat the birthplace return as the point of the trip
- Nagasaki’s Oura and Urakami Cathedrals and Twenty-Six Martyrs sites
- Optional Goto Islands ferry for Hidden Christian history
- A manageable Shikoku pilgrimage segment from Tokushima / Ryozenji
- Stay in pilgrim inns and small towns where conversation happens
Suggested route
Not a locked itinerary — a shape of the trip with room to bounce.
Real-world cost picture
Ballparks for a California-based traveler, shoulder season. Not quotes — shop hard.
Yen has been traveler-friendly lately — Japan feels more doable than the old stereotype if you stay in business hotels, hostels, and pilgrim inns.
- Flights
- West Coast → Okinawa (OKA) or via Tokyo/Osaka: often ~$700–1,400 RT in spring/fall if you watch Google Flights. Open-jaw (in OKA / out KIX or ITM) can be worth it.
- Lodging
- ~$45–90/night for clean business hotels & hostels outside peak cherry blossom/holiday spikes. Pilgrim inns on Shikoku are often simple and fair.
- Food
- ~$30–55/day eating local — yatai, convenience stores, set lunches. Easy to spend less.
- Getting around
- IC cards + regional trains; Shikoku mix of train/bus/taxi. Budget ~$350–700 total for the full loop depending how much you walk vs ride.
- Trip ballpark
- ~$3,500–6,500 for ~30 days solo, lean-to-comfortable (flights + stay + food + rail). Deals and yen swings move this a lot.

Advice
- Curated
Late March–April or mid-October–November keeps Shikoku walking cooler than peak summer heat.
- Curated
Open-jaw into Okinawa and out of Osaka/Kansai often beats round-tripping the same airport.
- Curated
Book only the first few nights — small inns and neighborhoods reward bouncing once you feel the place.
