Northern Spain & Portugal — Castles
Castle towns west across northern Spain into Portugal.
You already walked part of the Camino and love northern Spain and Portugal. This trip keeps that rhythm — movement, small towns, history — but points it at castles instead of finishing the way to Santiago again.
Why this trip
A full Camino rematch would repeat a story you’ve already started. Castle-hopping across the same northern corridor answers a different question: Can the pilgrim pace work when the landmarks are fortresses and palace-castles, not only cathedrals? Basque start, Olite’s towers, León’s Camino energy, Ponferrada’s Templar walls, Sanabria’s hill town, then Portugal’s Bragança and Guimarães before a soft landing in Porto.
The idea
Castle towns west across northern Spain into Portugal.
Not a Camino redo. Move town to town the way a pilgrim does — small bases, real history, stone walls — from the Basque coast through Navarre and León, then over the border into Bragança and Guimarães.
What the days could feel like
Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.
Morning
Coffee, then the castle or old town while light is soft and tour groups are thin.
Afternoon
A neighboring village, rampart walk, or the next bus/train hop west.
Evening
Plaza dinner and an early night — movement tomorrow, not nightlife.
One fortress or historic center per stop is enough. Leave blank days between hops.
Anchor experiences
- Ease in on the Basque coast before turning inland to stone towns
- Olite’s palace-castle — towers, ramparts, a small-town base
- León as the Camino-city pause without committing to a full walk west
- Ponferrada’s Templar castle, then Puebla de Sanabria’s hill-town quiet
- Cross into Bragança and Guimarães — northern Portugal’s fortress corridor — finish in Porto
Suggested route
Not a locked itinerary — a shape of the trip with room to bounce.
Real-world cost picture
Open-jaw in Basque Country / out Porto usually beats round-tripping one airport.
Northern Spain/Portugal is friendlier than Paris-tier Europe — small-town lodging and menus keep the burn down if you skip tourist-menu traps.
- Flights
- West Coast → BIO/EAS (Basque) or via MAD/BCN, out of OPO: open-jaw often ~$650–1,300 RT in May–Jun or Sep–Oct.
- Lodging
- ~$45–95/night in medium towns (Olite, León, Guimarães). San Sebastián and Porto run higher — keep those shorter.
- Food
- ~$30–55/day — pintxos and menú del día stretch farther than fancy Basque tasting menus.
- Getting around
- Train/bus for the spine; car helpful Sanabria ↔ Bragança. Budget ~$250–500 plus optional car week.
- Trip ballpark
- ~$3,200–6,000 for ~4 weeks solo, lean-to-comfortable.

Advice
- Curated
Open-jaw into the Basque Country and out of Porto — don’t round-trip the same airport.
- Curated
May–June or September–October: walkable weather without summer heat locking you indoors.
- Curated
A car helps most on the Sanabria–Bragança border stretch; keep the rest on trains and buses if you want.
