Hokkaido — The Other End of Japan
Hokkaido separately — Sapporo up to Cape Sōya.
Japan #1 is roots: Okinawa, Nagasaki, Kyushu, pilgrimage. This is Japan #2 years later: northern landscapes and the opposite end of the country where you were born.
Why this trip
Combining this with the roots journey would blur two different questions. After returning to Okinawa someday, make a separate trip north: rail and road through Hokkaido until you reach Cape Sōya and feel the country’s other edge.
The idea
Hokkaido separately — Sapporo up to Cape Sōya.
Not part of the Okinawa trip. Cool weather, open space, northern rail, Wakkanai and the cape. Opposite end of the country from where you were born.
What the days could feel like
Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.
Morning
Cool air and a train or drive with big sky ahead.
Afternoon
Town stop, coastline, or simply covering distance north.
Evening
Hearty food and early quiet — northern Japan winds down honestly.
Anchor experiences
- Sapporo base — 5–6 days of city and food
- Asahikawa as mid-island pause
- Northern Hokkaido rail/road journey
- Wakkanai and Cape Sōya — northern-edge day
- Flexible landscape days on the return
Suggested route
Not a locked itinerary — a shape of the trip with room to bounce.
Real-world cost picture
Keep this separate from the Okinawa/Kyushu trip — different chapter.
Same Japan-friendly yen story, but northern distances and fewer cheap beds than Tokyo.
- Flights
- West Coast → CTS (Sapporo) direct/rare or via HND/NRT: often ~$700–1,400 RT in Sep–Oct.
- Lodging
- ~$50–100/night in Sapporo; smaller northern towns vary — book Wakkanai earlier.
- Food
- ~$30–55/day — Sapporo food is half the fun.
- Getting around
- Rail pass math vs point-to-point; buses/car for the far north. Budget ~$250–550 inside Hokkaido.
- Trip ballpark
- ~$2,800–5,500 for ~3 weeks.
