Bolivia — Highlands Corridor

A doable highlands loop — cheap on the ground, honest about altitude and safety.

Bolivia is one of the cheapest meaningful South America trips if you keep the route simple. The question isn’t whether it’s ‘safe enough for reckless travel’ — it’s whether you can plan altitude, cities, and overland hops with common sense.

Why this trip

Uruguay is the soft first landing on the continent. Bolivia is the affordability chapter: Spanish practice, highland cities, and a classic Uyuni finish — without pretending every overnight bus or remote stretch is carefree. Stick to La Paz / Sucre / Uyuni. Daytime intercity travel when you can. Give La Paz real acclimatization days. Petty crime exists in cities like anywhere; the bigger traveler risks are altitude illness and exhaustion from trying to do too much too fast.

The idea

A doable highlands loop — cheap on the ground, honest about altitude and safety.

La Paz to acclimatize, Sucre for colonial calm, Uyuni for the salt flats. Stay on the well-traveled corridor. Flights are the expensive line; once there, daily costs drop hard.

What the days could feel like

Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.

Morning

Slow start in La Paz — altitude first, sightseeing second.

Afternoon

One neighborhood, plaza, or museum. Skip stacking big days.

Evening

Early dinner, hydrate, sleep. Overnight buses only when daytime isn’t realistic.

If you’re breathless or dizzy, rest — the corridor will still be there tomorrow.

Anchor experiences

  • La Paz: teleférico views, neighborhoods, and 3–4 slow days to acclimatize
  • Optional Copacabana / Lake Titicaca only if altitude already feels okay
  • Sucre — white streets, plazas, the calmest base on the loop
  • Short Potosí look if energy allows — don’t force mines on a bad altitude day
  • Uyuni salt-flat tour as the landscape finale, then fly or bus out cleanly

Real-world cost picture

Budget slack for an extra La Paz rest day. Petty-crime common sense in cities; overnight buses are tiring more than ‘adventure.’

On the ground, Bolivia is genuinely cheap. The expensive parts are getting there and not rushing altitude.

Flights
West Coast → LPB (La Paz) or VVI (Santa Cruz) then domestic: often ~$700–1,400 RT. Open-jaw LPB in / Uyuni-area out can work when fares cooperate.
Lodging
Hostels and simple hotels often ~$15–45/night on the La Paz–Sucre–Uyuni corridor. Sucre monthly deals exist if you linger.
Food
~$12–25/day markets and local spots — easy to stay lean.
Getting around
Daytime buses / shared taxis between cities; Uyuni tours are the bigger local spend (~$100–250 depending on length). Prefer day hops when you can.
Trip ballpark
~$1,800–3,500 for ~2–3 weeks solo lean-comfortable — flights dominate; daily life is the bargain.

Advice

  • Curated

Give La Paz 3–4 slow days first — altitude illness ruins more trips than ‘safety scares.’

  • Curated

Stick to La Paz → Sucre → Uyuni. Prefer daytime buses; overnight hops only when the schedule forces it.

  • Curated

Flights are the expensive line. On the ground, markets and simple hotels keep the burn rate low.
